Possums, birds and dixies.

7 november 2017 - Linkwater, Nieuw-Zeeland

I got out off my bed before our alarm went off. That was about six o'clock in the morning. The alarm would have gone on half past six so that was not that bad. We had a long drive ahead off us and therefore we wanted to be in our awesome car at eight.

We use to write a diary when we were on holidays together, when we were young. Good old times. Simone still does that and she is really creative and now that we are travelling together again I also write one. Takes a bit time to keep up with my blog at the same time so I try to write the diary when she is driving. . That's not always easy but well its not that you can see the difference. My handwriting is almost as good as a doctor, really bad.

Simone was still laying in bed when I stood up so I was doing my diary. It didn't took her long so their we were sitting at the table in the sun writing and fiddling. We were really going strong so when we got in the car it was half past eight. Off we go to the wine and bike tours in Renwick! We drove over the Lewis Pass and that should take us 7 hours. .

The weather was not that good, a good day to drive though."Keep following this road for 268km" pfff. It all took a little bit longer because they were working on the road all over the place. You see quite a lot dead animals on the roads, possums, birds, cats etc. So it's not a surprise that you see a bird having his lunch on the highway but he should fly away when a car is coming. But this bird really liked his food because it didn't go away. When he finally decided to fly away he wanted to take a piece with him. But it was too heavy so he had a choice. . Keeping it and end next to it or drop it and staying alive. Hard decision I guess. . I understand his choice because I also love food!! But well life is all about making choices and some off them are difficult. And now I will tel you guys a good life lesson:
Do you have a problem in life:
No    -->  then why worry?
Yes --> can you do somethin about it --> yes --> then why worry?
                                                                       No -->  then why worry?
But well you need to life to make those dicisions and how much I love food, I love my life way more. And luckly the bird felt the same way about that. So he dropped his meat and we just missed him. Good on him!

We got in Renwick at 4:00pm and the wineries would close at 4:30pm so we decided to drive some more so we had more time tomorrow in Charlet Sound. The weather was still bad and it was getting pretty windy. There was an oncoming car with a dixie on it. And as he was getting closer to us you could see the dixie move. And move a bit more . . and more. . AND MORE!! One more push from the wind and you could see that is was going to fall and that was what happend. It felt over just a few seconds before he would have passed us. You could hear a high noice getting out of Simone's mouth as the dixie hit the right side of the road in front of us. Thank you strange roads! Because we were driving on the left side! A few rocks hit the car and I wanted to have a look if the driver needed a help with getting it back up. I was checking our car and I found the birds lunch hanging in the grill of our car.

For us it was time for some lunch too. In Havelock we had a stop to eat some of their famous Greenshell Lip mussel and a glass of wine. New energie for the last part of our trip today. We drove past Canvastown and I couldn't remember that we had to pas that town. . Then we got on the French pass and that definitelly didn't look like people were driving there a lot. That wasn't all because we also needed a gasstation. . I looked at the navigation and that didn't look good. We were driving in the falls direction for the last 40minutes. Just try to turn around on such a small pass. . It was already getting dark. . Finally we were back in Havelock and found a gasstation. Offcourse it was closed and Simone tried her card but that didn't work. . Creditcard then. . That one didn't work either. My turn. But mine were also not working. . It was not our lucky day. . Or was it?!

Just a few seconds later a young mann pulled over. It seemed that it was working for him so I started to talk. I explained our situations. . Two Dutch backpackers were driving all day, got lost, it was getting dark and the weather was getting more and more windy, we were tired and just wanted a place to sleep and now that we really needed fuel the machine didn't accept our card. We were really desperate and didn't know what to do anymore. . I was almost crying. . That would have been how it would have gone when it was a movie. .  a drama. .

Luckly we are not in a movie but just on holidays. What actually happend was that the young mann pulled over and I started a conversation and asked if he knew why it didn't work with our card. He asked if we had some cash, and we did. So he tanked for us and we gave him the money. Lucky us. . Because it didn't look like that a lot off people come her to fill up their tank. Not long after that we found a place to sleep, Smiths farm. We wanted to sleep in a tent that night but it was already 8:30pm and the weather was not looking better. . A cabin would be great this night.
